Liberty Biosecurity and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's research publication on assembled genomes from Mars InSight spacecraft surfaces and associated surfaces released in Microbiology Resource Announcements
The first publication regarding the genomes of microbial isolates from pre-flight InSight hardware affiliated surfaces was released on May 21. This joint research effort between Liberty Biosecurity and the Planetary Protection group at JPL is the first in a series that will look at the ability to successfully identify the organisms present in spacecraft production facilities and on spacecraft hardware. The ultimate goal for LBS would be to develop a genome-based strain identification system for implementation into currently existing environmental monitoring practices to track and catalogue the presence of microbes on spacecraft surfaces and assembly environments.
